Youth Supporting Peers

An introduction to mental health, exploring some of the stigma and key issues that youth are facing today.  An interactive approach is used to engage youth in discussing common issues, and learning how to seek help and support one another in crisis.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Recognize signs that a young person may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being
  • Communicate effectively with young people
  • Apply the ACTION Model for Providing Mental Health First Aid
  • Discuss professional and other supports that could help with recovery to improved mental well-being
  • Assist in a mental health or substance use crisis situation
  • Check-in with one’s own mental well-being and act as needed

Looking out for our Youth and supporting their mental as well as their physical health can be a key building block for their success in life.

Mental health awareness and support can create the foundation for a young person’s education, movement into occupational roles, healthy habits, forming of key social relationships, and overall enjoyment of life.

Just like with physical health, it is important mental health is promoted at an early stage in life. Due to its significant role in our overall wellbeing, its important to take a proactive approach and that any problems or concerns are both detected and supported as early as possible.
